Collins declines town meeting proposal

Sen. Susan Collins declined the opportunity to attend four town hall meetings with opponent Tom Allen this August, citing the lateness of his invitation.

Cape voters shoot down school budget again

CAPE ELIZABETH-- Voters on Tuesday rejected the proposed school budget for a second time, with the majority saying the $19.9 million budget is too high.

The unofficial result is 1,141 votes against the budget and 1,097 in favor of it. In the advisory question on the ballot, 66 percent of voters said the budget is too high. (Maine Today, Staff)

Maine energy plan readied

AUGUSTA—Saying the nation is "dangerously dependent" on foreign oil, a report presented Tuesday to Gov. John Baldacci calls for a series of energy-reducing efforts, such as expanded home weatherization, additional energy audits and more transportation options. (Boston Globe, AP)

Taxes increase in York for first time since 2001

YORK — For the first time since 2001, the town's tax rate will be increasing.

Tax bills that will go out soon reflect a 16-cent increase in the cost per $1,000 of valuation, from $8.10 to $8.26, assessor Rick Mace told the Board of Selectmen at a meeting Monday. (Seacoast Online, Deborah Mcdermott)
