Ethan Strimling’s campaign has returned a $250 donation from a Connecticut hedge fund, saying it was given as a “dirty trick” by one of Chellie Pingree’s supporters.
Strimling and Pingree are both Democratic candidates in the 1st Congressional District race. Six Democrats and two Republicans are seeking the seat.
Pingree’s campaign said they know nothing of the donation, and public records searches show the fund’s founder had donated to Strimling’s interests in the past.
Strimling campaign manager Corey Hascall said the donation from Selwyn Sussman of Rye Brook, New York came after the campaign sent out a fundraising solicitation that criticized Pingree for taking money from employees of Paloma Partners, a hedge fund based in Greenwich, Ct.
Pingree has received $51,000 this cycle from members of the company, according to campaign finance reports.
Hascall said the name used on the Strimling donation is really the founder of Paloma Partners, Donald Sussman, using a different first name. Attempts to reach Donald Sussman Monday were unsuccessful.
"This is nothing more than attempted dirty politics by the Pingree camp, right out of the Republican Party play-book," Hascall said in a statement. "Ethan is trying to get big special interest money out of politics, and Pingree is trying to spread hers around. We don't play this kind of politics and we expected better from her campaign."
Pingree’s campaign said today they know nothing of Sussman’s donation to Strimling. Willy Ritch, communications director for Pingree, issued the following statement:
“Chellie Pingree and her entire campaign staff are entirely focused on spreading her positive message of change on issues important to Mainers--ending the war in Iraq, fixing our economy and solving our health care crisis and neither she nor anyone in her campaign has any knowledge of or has been involved with directing contributions to any of her opponents.”
This isn’t the first time Sussman has donated to Strimling’s interests, however.
In 2003, Sussman donated $300,000 to CasinosNO! Strimling was on the board of the anti-gambling PAC, and employs two others who were involved in it – Hascall and Dennis Bailey.
But that’s different, Hascall said.
“When he gave money for a single referendum, that just means he was against gambling in Maine,” Hascall said. However, “When you give money to candidates for Congress, there are loopholes in Congress that never close for hedge fund managers.”
Other candidates the Paloma Partners are supporting this year are:
Connecticut Sens. Joe Lieberman and Christopher Dodd and Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass.
Sussman, using his other address in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, has also donated to the Maine State Democratic Committee and the Pingree Leadership Fund, the PAC Pingree’s daughter, Hannah Pingree, used while running for state House majority leader in 2006.
Hascall said it’s the timing and the amount of the Sussman donation to Strimling that’s odd. It came right after the campaign criticized Pingree for taking money from Paloma Partners, and the amount, $250, is just enough to show up on a campaign finance report, she said.
Hascall cited a passage by Allen Raymond, a Republican strategist who served jail time for phone jamming and wrote the book, “How to Rig an Election: Confessions of a Republican Strategist," which noted such donations were used to open campaigns up to a "charge of graft."

Consistency.
So Bailey and Hascall don't mind when this guy gives them $300,000 to ban casinos, but when he gives to someone else it's "dirty"?
Riiiiiight. Nice try, Bailey.
Consistency?
I don't recall that Sussman tried to disguise his name and address when he donated to CasinosNO! Something smells. There's more going on here than this reporter was able to suss out.
Non Denial Denial
Love the non-denial denial from Pingree's camp. Like Watergate.
Watergate?
What?
How is this a "dirty trick" at all, let alone like Watergate? Someone unaffiliated with the Pingree campaign gave them money, and then gave Strimling money. So what?
Is Ethan returning all donations from people that gave to more than one campaign?
Or is he grasping at straws and going negative because the only reputable poll in this race showed him in single digits (and within the margin of error of Steve Meister)?
Sometimes it's not so good to be the "King".
Watergage
"Unaffiliated with the Pingree campaign?" Just how uninformed are you?
Not Watergate
But suspicious and potentially unethical all the same.
Here's the chain of events as I understand them.
1. Last year, Pingree gets between $51K and $60K from employees and spouses of one hedge fund, owned/managed by S. Donald Sussman. (numbers vary from source to source, would like to see the time-frame on those contrbutions)
2. Two weeks ago, Strimling sends out a fundraising e-mail criticizing her for taking this money, and at the same time complaining about hedge funds and their tax rates and influence in elections.
3. A few hours later, a Selwyn D. Sussman makes a contribution to Strimling. It appears unsolicited (why criticize someone, then ask that person for money?), and he used a name and address that he never used before, including his contributions to Pingree a few months before.
So, it looks pretty sketchy, especially with that almost exact description of that campaign tactic by Allen Raymond. There's the possibility Sussman did it on his own prerogative, but does he stalk his inbox for e-mails of his candidate's competitors?
I suspect we'll learn more in time. Can't wait to see the reports for the last quarter!
P.S. - Link, everyone knows those Lake polls are bullshit. I have no doubt she's ahead in name recognition, and probably support, there's no way Lawrence and Strimling are trailing Brennan, and Pingree in 30 points up. Where's the methodology?
Strimling et al enjoyed
Strimling et al enjoyed sussman's money for years. Now that you didn't get it your are mad. Boo hoo.
Either his campaign is
Either his campaign is wearing tinfoil hats, or they're trying any way possible to get press coverage. This is non-news.
Who do are candidates represent?
Alot can be said about out-of-state money filling the candidates campaign coffers.
For instance, according to the FEC.gov website, in 2007 each US Senate candidate received over 900k from out-of-state donors and about 450K from in state. Now with Pingree receiving $60,000 from a CT hedgefund, you have to wonder for which 'master' does one represent. The one who is going to put and keep you in office or the one who elected you in office.
Its sad in a way because any time and energy spent requesting and acknowledging an out-of-state campaign contributor is time and energy taken away from the hopes and dreams - or the concerns and problems - of the constituents an official is elected to represent. Yes, I know thats why a candidate hires campaign staff; but, is a candidate not going to call or send a note to an non-Maine contributor who just dropped $2,300 to a campaign?
In time, honor and integrity are the first and last virtues eroded by a political system that is fueled by money and focused on winning rather than bringing positive change and building foundations for the future.
Not Watergate
I doubt that Sussman's contribution to the Strimling campaign was "unsolicited." Since he's given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Strimling-affiliated causes in the past, you can bet he's on their mailing list.
