Independent U.S. Senate candidate Herb Hoffman just passed his current hurdle in his challenges to get on the November ballot.
Today Superior Court Justice Donald Marden issued a decision siding with the Secretary of State’s office in their case versus John Knutson, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, the Associated Press is reporting.
Knutson had challenged Hoffman’s qualifying petition, arguing that a number of signatures were invalid. The Secretary of State’s office invalidated a number of Hoffman’s signatures, but in the end he still had enough to remain on the ballot.
Knutson appealed the decision to the Maine Superior Court. Last Thursday, attorney Daniel Walker argued that because the party proved that Hoffman didn’t personally witness three of the signatures, three full petition sheets should be invalidated.
There is one option left for the Democrats – appealing to Maine’s Supreme Court. As of last week, the Democrats weren’t sure they were going to take this route. Officials from the party could not be immediately reached for further comment.
However, according to the AP article, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said that while they are confident in their decision, an appeal to the Maine Supreme Court would not surprise him.

Democracy Upheld
Yet again, providing ballot access and expanding voter's options, despite challenges by the undemocratic party. Unlike Dems, I support people's right to run for office. Think they'll try to keep me from voting for him, too? What techniques will they use in November if they do this now?
Was Machiavelli a Democrat?
Maybe not, but the Maine Democratic Party seems to have made THE PRINCE required reading for its operatives. These guys will stop at nothing to gain and hold onto power. Very scary stuff...
Don't fall for this nonsense
This reporter has swallowed the biggest lie of this whole story- that it is the Maine Democrat party that is behind this. Make no mistake- the Maine Democrats are doing Tom Allen's work here.
It's really lame that Jessica doesn't mention Allen at all in this article, and instead is duped by the Dems once again.
To be clear:
- Tom Allen is the Maine Dem's candidate for Senate
- Tom Allen is the sole beneficiary of a Hoffman-free ballot this November
- Tom Allen previously strong-armed the Party into treating his primary opponent (also a Dem) totally unfairly, devoting fewer resources to his campaign and shilling for Allen constantly.
If this reporter is too timid or naive to call BS like it is, I can't wait till the GOP starts shredding Tom Allen, while the Collins people are completely insulated from scrutiny. That is, if she holds them to the same non-standard she does the Dems.
