Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has a background in hunting, fishing and snowmobiling, and some Republicans say this will make U.S. Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) ticket very attractive in the 2nd Congressional District.
"McCain can't win the second district," said Chris Potholm, a political science professor at Bowdoin College. "But she can win it for him."
This was one of the first observations of John Frary, the Republican candidate for the 2nd Congressional District.
"This is a selection that should send chills down the spines of nanny state urbanites everywhere. As I understand it, not only does this woman have a horde of children, she also snowmobiles and owns guns, and although I can not say with certainty that she has a shotgun across the back window of her pickup, I wouldn't be surprised," Frary wrote in a statement.
Scott Fish, editor of the conservative message board As Maine Goes, said that enthusiasm for U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is declining throughout the state.
"All over Maine, the more we get to know (Barack Obama), the shallower of a guy he is," Fish said. "He's more of the same -- (Gov. John) Baldacci on steroids."
Rick Bennett, the Republican National Committeeman-elect, said her hunting background will help, but is not the only reason people will vote for the McCain ticket. He said the whole state will be competitive.
"I think good moose hunting credentials will earn the support of some Mainers," he said.

If Palin was a man who just
If Palin was a man who just 19 months ago was a Mayor of a town would McCain have picked her? Are there no other qualified women in the Republican Party?
Country First?
There are many good women out there who do most of the things that Palin does. That's great. BUT, that doesn't qualify them to be Vice-President.
And, when you hear GOP's slogan "Country first" in comparison to this choice for Vice President, I must say "what a joke"! It must be a joke. If not, then why did McCain pick someone so ill-equipped to take his place should something happen to him? Talk about a truly, scary thought! I know the Republicans like to throw in the “fear card”, but, boy, this one is beyond scary, it’s insane. AND, does McCain really think that intelligent Hillary supporters would vote for this GOP ticket simply because she's a woman and a mother? She may be a good person, BUT it certainly doesn't qualify her or anyone else like her, to be a Vice-President, who, by the way, would be "a heart-beat away from becoming President". Especially if you take time to compare her to Hillary. What a chauvinist McCain must be! What an insult to all the well-read, educated and well-versed Hillary supporters as well as other well-read, educated and well-versed women in this country. He must think that we're all air-heads. McCain should have simply hosted a lottery and then randomly picked the raffle's winning number. (Gee, I love the outdoors, have gone hunting, fishing, etc. I have a family, I've worked for non-profit groups and causes, have been active with civic affairs, etc., I couldn’t been in that lottery!) He would’ve had the same results. So, this is the best the GOP could come up with, huh. And, McCain has the nerve to say "Country first"? What a big disgrace to the GOP party! If this is how he chose his Vice-President it’s even scarier to think of whom he would choose for other important cabinet posts! (Maybe McCain is beginning to show signs of dementia and is starting to feel his age). The GOP Party has truly lost any respect I've ever had for it.
And, by the way, "Maine Outdoor Guy", your answer is typical of so many like you, when someone cannot come up with intelligent reasons, they resort to "name-calling", like children in a school yard, who are just trying to make themselves look better. Good job. That really makes me want to vote Republican – NOT.
