League of Young Voters endorse Dems, one Green

UPDATED

The Portland League of Young Voters has endorsed a slate of legislative and national candidates for the general election.

The League has a registered political action committee which had $12,515 in its coffers as of July 22, the most recent data available.

The candidates are:

  • House District 114: Peter Stuckey (D-Portland)
  • HD 115: Michael Hiltz (Green Independent-Portland)
  • HD 116: Charlie Harlow (D-Portland)
  • HD 117: Anne Haskell (D-Portland)
  • HD 118: Jon Hinck (D-Portland)
  • HD 119: Herb Adams (D-Portland)
  • Senate District 8: Justin Alfond (D-Portland)
  • School Committee At-Large: Elizabeth Holton
  • City Council District 5: Naomi Mermin
  • City Council At-Large: Ed Suslovic
  • Water Board Trustee: Jamie Willey
  • Congressional District 1: Chellie Pingree (D-North Haven)
  • US Senate: Tom Allen (D-Portland)
  • President/Vice President: Barack Obama/Joe Biden

The league wrote of Pingree:

"Chellie is the poster child of the successful non-traditional candidate. As a mother, a farmer, and a small business owner, Chellie rose through the ranks to become an effective and feisty politician. Her role as the president of Common Cause convinces us that she is deeply motivated by the issues and not by the power. Chellie has a ridiculous amount of ideas, all of which are grounded in real debates already happening in DC and locally. Her labor and environmental analysis impress us, as does her willingness to take on corporate power."

The league wrote of Allen:

"In the past, Tom has worked to get things done: he led the first fight to pass the state’s first anti-discrimination law while on the Portland City Council. He supports protecting our environment, a woman's right to choose, increasing access to education, and minimizing the strain on middle- and working-class folks. If elected, he would be a strong advocate for the Employee Free Choice Act, which would protect employees’ right to join a union, and he would work to end the war that has cost Americans billions. Over the past 10 years, Tom has voted with us and demonstrated his prowess in understanding and developing strong policy. "

.....League of Young Liberals. Please. Give me a break. They're an arm of the Democratic Party, in Maine and nationally. What a bunch of fakers.

And you wonder, PD

why the republicans have lost people in droves for the Democratic party- this exact sentiment. "Hey kid, get off my lawn." It's perfect that McCain is your nominee.

Plenty of young people

Plenty of young people support McCain and the GOP. Young conservatives are as excited about the McCain/Palin ticket as Young liberals are about the Obama/Biden ticket.

I am declaring this release - and the organization - illegitimate precisely because of that reason. You misunderstood my entire post, which is not surprising. This organization was created by the Dems to give the impression that all young people are single-mindedly united behind them, and the extreme partisanship of their endorsements (save one) proves it.

It's perfect that someone who entirely misunderstands simple statements is supporting Obama. He's the perfect candidate for you.
