Rematch in the Making: Sawyer v. Perry

Tom Sawyer, a Republican from Bangor, has emailed supporters letting them know that he will be seeking the Senate Seat in district 32 (Bangor and Hermon). Sawyer held that seat until 2004, where he lost a close election against the current occupant – Senator Joe Perry (D-Bangor). Senator Perry is chair of the Legislature’s taxation committee, and is expected to seek a third term.

The Sawyer announcement, comes just a few days after Mary Andrews (R-York), told a reporter in York County that she planned on running for the Senate seat she have up in 2006. The Sawyer and Andrews announcements are good news for the Senate Republicans, where it looks as though they are heading in to this election cycle with a 2 or 3 seat advantage.

The Senate democrats, however, always put up a good fight and it is expected that they have a number of good candidates waiting in the wings.

This is way off base

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't this district usually vote for Democrats. And more to the point didn't Senator Perry handily beat Sawyer last time around?

Further this November's election is going to be a referendum on the last eight years of republican failure. Why would the same republican challenger have an easier time beating the same Democrat that beat him last cycle?

Sorry to say it but this was a poorly researched article at best or a very biased article at worst.

Race

It should be a good race. It was close last time. a 280 vote difference--which was the closest senate race in 2004.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "last 8 years" other than the fact that you are a partisan hack. The entire state is run by democrats--good luck blaming ge0rge bush in the 2008 elections - I'll bet it is anti-incumbent fever.

Also--last time I checked Joe Perry has been chairing the tax committee for quite some time.

Joe Perry is a nice guy.

Joe Perry is a nice guy. However, Perry’s years as the Senator from Bangor has been an under-whelming experience for his constituents. Joe is a nice guy, but doesn’t get much done. Bangor is about to grow exponentially with the good news Peter Vigue has brought and the opening of the new casino (Perry had nothing to do with either). Tom Sawyer will be the best bet to protect the interests of these two gargantuan employers and the interests of the area. Again, Joe is a nice guy, but hardly the kind of guy that should be representing the third largest city in the state of Maine.

Tom loses his clout, Wants it back

tom sawyer is in this for personal gain vs doing for the public. He has lost his clout with friends and high business people since losing the election. Tom loves to be in the public eye with all about tom whereas Joe Perry is low keyed and is all about for the public. When you have a millionaire and a pay check to pay check working in office, who cares the most.. the paycheck to paycheck because there just like you and I and have a better understanding. Its like having a delivery driver help make decisions on a company changes vs having the CEO make the decisions, The driver ideas are realistic and is looking out for his co-workers. Go Joe... DO in Bangor
