A former radio host, Ritch first got involved in politics by campaigning against coal gasification plants.
"Everyone comes to a point in their life where they realize what they are not going to be. I came to that point recently. I'll never be a nationally famous talk show host or be rich, but I realized that I could make a contribution, something that could make the world a better place to live in,” he told reporter Dennis Hoey.
