Blethen Maine Newspapers, owners of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Portland against the Portland Newspaper Guild.
They're trying to resolve the legal question of whether its contract with Local 128 of the Newspaper Guild is binding on future owners.
Publisher Chuck Cochrane has this to say in an email sent to newspaper employees:
"Even though the owners of Blethen Maine Newspapers do not believe that a buyer can be forced to assume the guild contract, they are willing to ask prospective buyers if they will agree to do so voluntarily. However, none of the interested parties has so far indicated any inclination to accept the current contract as it is written."

It appears the website for PPH has been offline since Friday morning. I'm curious if on-line advertisers (my company is one) will be reimbursed; actually I'm wondering if the website (and the paper) is down for the count. To get a more honest view of what's really going on, google news for the Seattle Times.
