Dean Scontras and his staff travelled the state Saturday, touting his lack of experience – in politics, that is.
Scontras is running for the First Congressional District against Charlie Summers.
Crowds at the various caucuses all heard the story about a dairy farmer Scontras met. The farmer asked him if he’d served in Washington, Scontras said no. He asked if he’d served in Augusta. Scontras said no.
The farmer said Scontras got his vote.
“The one thing I’ve learned about Mainers is that they vote for people, not politicians,” Scontras told one group.
Scontras is touting his business experience, and has earned support in Maine’s business community. He has promised not to vote for any bill that would raise taxes, and also repeal the estate tax.
He calls himself a “Reagan Republican.”
“I want to rebuild the house that Reagan built,” he said.
Collins has the support of 94% of her party’s voters compared to Allen’s 80% support among Democratic voters. >

Chellie's extensive business experience
Dean Scontras is wrong when he claims that Chellie Pingree has no business experience. In fact, Chellie has started and managed several successful businesses.
I first heard of the name Chellie Pingree through a graphic designer who was doing some work for my now-defunct small business back in the 1980s -- long before Chellie ran for the Maine senate (in 1992). He would often stop by my office on his way back from meeting with Chellie about her business, and would tell me how smart she was and what a sharp business sense she had. This was in the days of her successful company, North Island Designs, which sold knitting kits all over the country, produced several beautiful books of knitting patterns, and employed a number of the residents of North Haven, mostly women, for whom there were very few other year-round job opportunities on the island.
Prior to that, Chellie ran an organic farm, selling a variety of farm products, including milk and eggs, to people in her community. Today she is a partner in an inn and restaurant in North Haven called http://www.NeboLodge.com. Chellie's close connection to her community stems in large part from her business endeavors -- in each case, she sought to fill a niche and successfully did so.
Once in the Maine senate, in recognition of her interest in growing small business opportunities for Mainers, Chellie was named co-chairman of the Maine Economic Growth Council. In 1993, she was named to the International Trade Committee at the National Conference of State Legislatures. In 1997, she was named senate chair of the Housing and Economic Development Committee.
Clearly, her interest in and experience with business management is wide, deep, and enduring -- albeit leaning toward the small business, rather than corporate, side.
Maine's 1st Congressional District
I heard Dean Scontras speak at the caucus over the weekend and I believe that he is what the people of Maine need in Washington. He brings a successful background in business combined with common sense and character to stand up for what is right. He is not afraid to take a position on the issues and is authentic in his concern for the people of Maine. He will work to provide tax relief to all Mainers. He will work toward eliminating the Death Tax, which has a devastating effect on Maine’s small businesses. He knows that border security and ending our illegal immigration are critical to our national security. He called on Governor Baldacci to end Maine's status as a Sanctuary State for illegal immigrants by rescinding his Executive Order that encourages illegal immigrants to come to Maine for driver's licenses and welfare benefits.
After the Primary in June the Republican candidate will face a well funded, move-on.org type of liberal who will only continue to increase the tax burden on Mainers and scare off potential business investment that would be beneficial to all of us. We need a sharp, charismatic candidate who can go toe to toe with the Democratic nominee. Dean Scontras is an energetic well spoken campaigner, who has the experience necessary to give the Democrats a challenge no matter how much money they take from their socialist special interest groups. We need representation in Washington that will work tirelessly to improve Maine’s fragile economic health before it is too late. Dean Scontras is that candidate.
