Ray Richardson, co-host of WLOB’s Fox Morning News radio show, declared his support for Dean Scontras’ campaign for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District.
Ray’s recent membership with “Team Dean” may come as a surprise to the Summers camp. He has often brought up his friendship with Dean’s Republican rival Charlie Summers and his wife Ruth, who has been campaigning on her husband’s behalf while he is serving in Iraq. Perhaps Ray’s endorsement is just an example of the old adage: “When the cat's away the mouse will play.”
Although Ray enjoys just limited influence in pockets of Southern Maine, his base, angry white men and disaffected conservative voters, often decide a primary election. So his endorsement might just have Dean walking a little taller today.
At any rate, Dean has done a great job of portraying himself as the conservative alternative to the Olympia Snowe Republican that is Charlie Summers. Things will get interesting, however, when Charlie returns from Iraq next month. His fundraising skills, ability to work a crowd, and his years of governing and campaigning experience might stop Dean in his tracks. Or maybe, with Ray’s endorsement, Dean has locked up support early enough to keep Summers at bay.
I’m beginning to enjoy this.

First Mikey Heath, now Ray!
Right wing nuts agree: Scontras for Congress!
Brilliant, Walt! Always a
Brilliant, Walt!
Always a sure sign of intelligence when folks like you start throwing around labels rather than have a substantive discussion of the issues.
Keep up the quality commentary!
Thanks!
Do you disagree? Scontras is doing a great job as far as the primary goes, but do you really think someone who counts Mikey Heath as one of his faith-based advisors stands in a chance of winning a general election in the 1st CD?
Don't hold your breath.
I do disagree
Heath is but one of more than 25 members of what Scontras calls his "Faith & Values" coalition. I wouldn't think it reasonable to say that Heath defines this part of the campaign, especially since Heath no longer has anywhere near the amount of influence that he's enjoyed in the past.
Scontras is "doing a great job" in the primary because he is the ONLY candidate to put a voice to the conservative principles that many Maine people have been waiting too long to hear. All one hears from the Democrats is same-old, same-old: tax it, subidize it, or regulate it.
Even the other Republican candidate supports more of the Democratic platform then their own!
Should Scontras win the primary, and right now he's looking very good, he is going to provide a very clear and engaging choice over the likes of Chellie Pingree or Ethan Strimling.
Hang around with nuts, ya get cracked.
anybody who would ask the likes of Heath to join a "coalition", is endorsing his extremist views, and is going to have a hard time in this district in November.
Heath is political poison at this point.
Ray's Influence
Don't underestimate the influence that Ray Richardson has in Maine. WLOB is a powerful radio station. Ray plays it very fair. He's had Strimling on his show several times (why, I don't know), and Strimling can be characterized as a "left wing nut" for sure. Scontras is a good man, and I hope he gets to face Strimling in November. The contrast between the two of them would be frightening.
