Remember LD 804?
Sure you do. It was "An act To Ensure Responsible Government Spending,Investment and Educational Efficiency" --which is a long way of saying - the bill to shut the TABOR(Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) people up.
Let me refresh your memories. In fact, why don't we let Dana Connors, the head of the State Chamber and TABOR's very own Judas spell it out for you, Here is the opening paragraph of his testimony:
I want to begin by thanking Senate President Beth Edmonds for submitting this bill on our behalf. The control of spending at all levels is of vital importance to the business community, and our bill is designed to assist all Maine people in this effort. This legislation significantly strengthens the requirements to override the spending limitations contained in the legislation that has come simply to be known as LD 1, enacted in 2005. As many of you are aware, LD 804 is the product of a coalition effort by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Municipal Association, the Maine Education Association, the Maine Service Centers Coalition and the Maine Hospital Association.
So let me get this straight: the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Municipal Association, the Maine Education Association, the Maine Service Centers Coalition and the Maine Hospital Association all came together to control spending. They managed to line up as sponsors Senate President Edmonds AND Speaker Cummings ---and the bill just died an unceremonious death last week in the Appropriation's committee?
Gosh, call me cynical --but was LD 804 ever for real?
Well, not to worry. Apparently the folks that brought you TABOR 1, knew exactly who they were dealing with and already have plans to deliver TABOR 2 to the voters in 2009.
I wonder if they will be able to count on Mr. Connors' support this time?
