Things got a little out of hand last week at a Guilford Historical Society meeting in Piscataquis County. According to a May 29th Bangor Daily News article, the society's secretary, Zarvin Shaffer, allegedly punched fellow member Al Hunt in the jaw after a contentious meeting in which Shaffer's father, Robert Shaffer (president of the society) took some flack for removing some pictures from the local museum. As if that wasn't enough, Zarvin's teenage son reportedly pulled the hair of Hunt's wife after she started lifting up chairs.
Watch out, Guilford residents. The Shaffer clan turns their battles into a family affair!
What the BDN article fails to mention is the connection between the Shaffers and John Frary, Republican nominee for the 2nd Congressional District. Robert Shaffer, Zarvin's father, is "CEO" of the Frary for Congress campaign, while Zarvin serves as "Assistant CEO." I imagine these titles are Frary-talk for campaign manager and assistant campaign manager, respectively.
Zarvin's Mike Tyson antics beg the question: Why are Maine Republican campaign staffers in New England so violent this cycle?
In February, long-time Maine Republican operative Barry Flynn (who most recently served as Sen. John McCain's press guy in New Hampshire), gets arrested for punching his girlfriend and breaking one of her ribs, and now, Frary's team is throwing punches at a Historical Society meeting.
I'll bet this story goes down in the Guilford history book
It was quite a week for Democrats in Denver and it would appear that our State Treasurer has recovered 20 million dollars that was all but ... >

Wow. Good thing nobody reads your articles wally. How much traffic does this site get?Keep up the great work.
This is a lame attack on Republicans because of a few incidients outside of campaign events and activities.

I would disagree with the previous comment ( I would guess they have some close ties to Frary).
I know that everyone, including the press corps, in the State House checks politicker everyday.
And this is relevant information, Mr. Frary thinks he represents the people of Maine, and wants us to send him to Washington to do so. Yet the man has the poor judement to hire thugs to run his campaign.
Who gets into a fight at a historical society meeting! And hair pulling? thats just dirty.

lol, THUGS?
If anything, the story is kind of funny, and of course, we don't know the details which would make this story make sense.
What this tells me is that Maine Dems take everything at shallow face value, which would explain their 2nd district congressional representative.
It also shows that the ME version of Wally Edge is an imbecile. Can it have something to do with the Democrats who bought the original politicker franchise and proceeded to destroy it?

Guilford Historical Society Meeting
A couple of points really need clarifying in the story concerning the fracas after the Guilford Historical Society meeting. The so-called chair used by Mrs Hunt was a folding canvas camp chair which she brought to the meeting herself and was refolded and inserted into its canvas tube after the meeting. She was carrying it, along with books and papers, as she exited the building. When Darius Shaffer accosted her with fists raised she dropped he books and raised her chair in front of her face as protection. Evidently when Shaffer saw this he decided to grab a handful of hair instead. The pictures in question were in a framed collage of 18 original panaramic shots of old time Guilford and irreplaceable. The pictures, along with the frame, were illegally removed by Robert Shaffer approximately 1 year ago and despite repeated requests for their return they were kept in his home until last month when he gave them to a local restaurant without any authority from the Society. It was outside the building after the meeting that the Shaffer hit squad struck. I hope this explains a little bit of what really happened.
Current Info
Just to keep this thread current, the kid has now been charged by the sherrif in this matter, the Shaffer's have been overwhelmingly voted out of office by the historical society and Frary has taken on the job of clearing the reputation of the Shaffer family here:
